PROJECT 1: Reading the Contexts of Traditional Streets

This project was about a study based on a Traditional street located at Kuala Lampur, or Malaka. We were asked to select and define the boundary of the street based on options given. Based on the selected street our task was to identify the Physical contexts such as Religious Buildings, Architecture facade & styles, Shophouses, Maket and Non Physical contexts such as Traditional trades, Businesses, Local & Traditional cuisines, Historical events, and Social institutions.

From this project I understood the relationship between architecture and its social, cultural, and intellectual context in the Asian region. I learnt to identify and differentiate between the physical and non physical contexts of a region. I leant about the tradional streets and its values from this project. Although at this pandemic situation I was not able to make a site visit for better and real understanding about the traditional street I chose, I was able to find the information from google websites, lecture notes and alsoo from my seniors. I could improve this project with better sketches with clear referencing.

PROJECT 2: Inforgraphic

In this assignment we are required to study about historical development of vernacular architecture based on our lecture handouts and as well as other sources and produce an infographic. Our assignment was assessed by the diagrams, information, composition and illustrations including design thinking, cosmology, building typology, special layout conception, structures, materials and construction of the chosen vernacular architecture type.

I learnt how to make an infographic design for the first time. Introduction to Types of Architecture, the depth of Architecture, facts that reflect architecture is what I learnt by this project. I was able to find information from lecture handouts and as well as Google websites. Clear diagrams would could have been used for improvement.

PROJECT 3: Research in Asian Architecture

From this group project we were given the task to research and discuss issues in the Asian architectural contexts with the help of our tutor and as well as lecture notes. The first task was to compile a board with a direction followed by Issues and case studies, we came up with on a research of a traditional street located in Kuala Lampur or Malaka city. Our second task was to present a video presentation as a group explaining all the facts and information we gathered.

I learnt how to look for issues without only looking for the pluses when I visit a site, which will help me improve my deign thinking in future. Working as a group with equally distributed work was also challenging. At this uncertain pandemic situation, as we are unable to physically visit the for this project, we managed to gather necessary information from Google websites such as google scholar and google maps. . The video could have been improved by using images, and video links in between that would have made it more interesting.
